On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to attend the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party’s Town Hall at Lenny Boy Brewery in Charlotte, featuring former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke. There was a sizable and enthusiastic crowd at the event, which filled the brewery’s event space with politically engaged citizens, local Democratic Party members, elected officials, first-time candidates, and even a singular Libertarian. (spoilers; it was me)

The evening began with an address from MeckDems Chair Wesley Harris, but things really got going with remarks from Anderson Clayton, the Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party. Clayton brought high energy into the room, delivering a speech filled with her typical regional flair, copious “y’alls,” optimism, and campaign-style enthusiasm. She emphasized the party’s recent successes in the Tar Heel State and stressed the importance of continuing to build momentum heading into upcoming elections.

Clayton’s introduction of Beto O’Rourke was met with cheers and applause as he took the floor (or more accurately, the center of the room) to deliver a passionate and likely well-rehearsed address to the crowd. O’Rourke focused on the goals of his town hall tour, which he framed as a way to reconnect with voters and listen to local concerns. His speech touched on familiar Democratic talking points, including improving life for Americans by addressing issues such as healthcare, voting rights, labor, and education.

Throughout his remarks, O’Rourke drew on the legacy of civil rights leaders like John Lewis of Georgia, invoking themes of civic duty, diversity, equity, inclusion, and political renewal. His delivery was both dynamic and confident, demonstrating why he remains one of the more prominent figures in Democratic circles. At times, the atmosphere in the brewery felt almost like a revival, a blend of political rally and motivational talk, with an emotional resonance that clearly struck a chord with many in the audience.

Following the speech, O’Rourke fielded audience questions. While most appeared to be pre-screened or friendly softballs, a few more pointed and likely unscripted ones slipped through. He responded with calm and poise, offering answers that were thoughtful, if indirect. His ability to stay composed and appear genuinely engaged, especially during the more challenging moments, was notable. One small but interesting detail: O’Rourke was more candid in tone than is typical of politicians, including occasional use of profanity, which some attendees found refreshing and endearing, though it wasn’t to everyone’s taste.

Overall, the event at Lenny Boy Brewery was well-organized and drew a large and engaged audience. Whether or not one agrees with the policy direction, it was a worthwhile experience to see firsthand how charismatic Democratic leaders are messaging their priorities and rallying support across North Carolina. It also served as a reminder of the value of attending events across the political spectrum to better understand the perspectives shaping our state’s political future.
